Self-management of resources by village communities.

Objectives

Set up in the town of Kayes, in Mali, Camide’s main objective is to help local communities to launch, manage and finance economic activities that favour sustainable development.

Results

Camide helped create and develop Benso Jamaanu, which has grown to become one of the largest Malian networks of self-managed savings and credit unions.

Camide is also behind the Aliniha initiative and a founding member of Aliniha International. This is why Camide has been so active in helping poor women from the region to get organised as an Self-Managed Aliniha Association.  Camide trained them, providing advice and support to help the progressive elaboration of their activities, while contributing to the priorities determined by Aliniha International.

In 2014, Camide actively helped all of the AAAs to progress. The eight existing AAAs developed a business plan. This led to two of them receiving significant financing so as to establish market gardens and buy a tractor. Another was given step-by-step help in developing a mini-creamery project. What’s more, one new AAAs was created and some 20 villages were prospected to study the possibility and feasibility of grouping them into an AAA. There are currently 9 fully AAA's coached by Camide.

Camide also facilitated meetings between various AAAs so as to ultimately encourage the foundation of an inter-AAA, similar to APFG's model. Within this context, the 8 AAAs in the region of Kayes are effectively connected by a finance pool (Tontine) into which each of them submits 10 000 CFA francs, a collective savings account that is allocated to one or the other AAA to start up an activity.

Camide’s experience and competences in micro-financing and economic development have proved to be crucial in the pilot and development phase of the Aliniha methodology, which it initiated together with the AFPG and Nebeday in 2008.

Our Support

The Foundation supports Camide to develop and to adopt tools that enable it to integrate the management of all its activities and therefore to perform even better as a social enterprise . Camide, funded by the Foundation, is supported and advised by Vincent Dawans, co-founder of Virtue Ventures.

The Foundation also finances Camide via its support to Aliniha International.
